Have you ever done something on a wing and a prayer? With the hope of a positive outcome, but thinking you have little chance of success?
I imagine each of us have had situations of varying degrees where we have done something on a wing and a prayer. It is during these times that our faith and hope are truly tested. We have no option but to fully surrender the situation to God and step out in faith.
I’ll never forget the first time I stepped onto a stage to share my story. I felt vulnerable and scared! It was something I NEVER imagined doing, but I stepped into it on a wing and a prayer. It wasn’t perfect, but with God, I did it. It was the first step in fulfilling the purpose He had for my life.
The expectations and plan I had for my life looked very different than God’s plan.
I said I would NEVER do public speaking. God’s plan was for me to speak in public.
I didn’t think my life was all that interesting. God’s plan was for me to share my story and make a difference in the lives of others.
I didn’t think what I had to say was all that important. God’s plan was for me to deepen my relationship with Him, to be His hands and feet, because what He has to say is important.
The key to a wing and a prayer is the PRAYER!
For me, pretty much all my thoughts are a conversation with God. I’m a thinker. I could sit without the television or music on all day, just reading, writing, or sitting in the quiet, letting my thoughts wander.
I know what you are thinking, pretty boring, huh!
My thoughts include people in my life, events in the world, situations I am facing. The back and forth thoughts in my mind are just as conversational as talking to my best friend. It’s me wondering and processing and talking things through in my mind and listening for answers. Not great, audible, booming-voice-of-God answers, but the whispers that settle into my thoughts and resonate in my heart.
Prayer is how I deepen my relationship with God. I can’t deepen my relationship with a friend or spouse without communicating. I also can’t deepen my relationship with God without communicating...communicating through prayer.
Jesus went off by himself to spend time with God in prayer. Just like Jesus, when we spend time with God in prayer, our relationship deepens, our purpose is clarified, and we are given the strength we need to carry out God’s call.
"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
Paul tells us in the above verse to give thanks in ALL circumstances. Prayer is not just about changing circumstances, although sometimes it does. It’s also about changing my heart and aligning my will with His. It’s about asking Him to give me a heart that would rather serve Him than serve my own desires.
When I can give thanks in all circumstances, I am filled with joy that only comes from trusting in the One who is in control.
Is God calling you to step out of your comfort zone? Is He asking you to do something on a wing and a prayer? I’ve been there, I know it’s scary. I also know that if it’s His plan, it’s worth it!
My friend, let Him lead you. Step out in Faith…on a wing and a prayer!
With love and joy,
Laura
