Fearless Faith!

The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1 (NIV)

If you’re watching the Olympics, you have seen athletes who are positively fearless! They do things that most of us look at and say, “I could never do that!” Like jumping off that incredibly steep ski platform or doing those extraordinary aerial jumps on those tiny little skis. How in the world do you get the nerve to go down that scary hill the very first time? And as I watched the downhill skiers, I was amazed at their incredible speed.

Fearless.

But what about real life? What about our faith journey? How can we be fearless there?

As those Olympians look down those steep slopes, they picture themselves performing every move with perfection. They can see it in their minds.

We can learn a thing or two from them!

King David, the Psalmist, gives us clear instructions about where to hold our gaze in Psalm 27. He says, “Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear.” He’s looking at life the way those Olympians do, with confidence. Confidence that God is with him, even when war breaks out against him.

In my own story, it’s all boiled down to where I’m looking. If I look at my situation, if I look at the world around me, if I look at myself, I feel fear. There are so many unknowns, so many what-if’s, so many ways I feel like I fall short or I will let people down.

When I take my eyes off the truth in His Word and who He says I am, fear can come sweeping over me like a tidal wave. Especially when I’m in a season of waiting. That’s when fear can start to get the best of me.

But we get to choose where we look, even in seasons of waiting!

If I look at the promises in His Word and who I am in Christ, I start to get braver. His Word tells us that “perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18). God does not want us to live our life in a place of fear. That is not His plan for us.

I wrote a song based on Psalm 27 called Fearless Faith. I’ve recorded a quick video of the song so I could share it with you because I believe music touches us in deep places. It’s a little over 3 minutes long, and I hope you’ll take the time to let these words wash over you. (The lyrics are below the video if you want to follow along.)

And if you’re in the middle of a battle right now, my friend, I pray as you listen to these words that were inspired by David that you will turn to God for your confidence and your hope!

That’s where we get Fearless Faith!

Hugs and love,

Jill

Fearless Faith (Psalm 27)

Words and music by Jill Miller (SESAC) and Shianne Borchers

Though war breaks against me

I'm safe in the cover of His tent

When all I see is darkness

I will stand, remain confident

He shows my enemies whose side He is on

The Lord is my light and my salvation

Whom shall I fear

The Lord is my hope and my foundation

Why should I be afraid

Cause I'm walking in fearless

Fearless Faith

Fearless Faith

I’m sure of His goodness

I’ve got everything I could need

I'm surrounded by His presence

Yahweh in every breath I breathe

I stand triumphant now, I lift my voice in praise

Chorus

He is my revelation light

I will not, I will not run and hide

I will be strong, take heart and wait

Take heart and wait

Wait, wait, wait
