Words.
Words are powerful.
Words can unite us or tear us apart.
Words shape our view …of the world, of ourselves, of others.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1:1 (NIV)
The beginning of time began with words. God spoke, the world was created, and it was good. That is powerful! Since words are powerful, should we not use our best words to create our best reality?
So why do we misuse this powerful tool?
As Christians, our heart has been changed by the power of God. Our words should reflect this change because our words reflect what is in our heart.
I believe that everything we do and say, no matter how small, carries with it an impact. When you come in contact with someone, you either leave them feeling better about themselves or worse, but you never leave them unaffected.
I can smile and give a compliment or I can begrudgingly say hi on my way to do something I deem more important. I can remind people of their value, or I can diminish their worth by saying nothing. Every one of us matters in every moment of the day.
Sometimes it's even in the way we talk to ourselves in our own minds. Do you get up and decide you're not in a good mood for the day, or do you get up and decide you will make a difference today? It's important, because that conversation will directly affect how you treat each person you see.
When I was going through breast cancer treatment, there was an individual who consistently sent me cards of encouragement. I don’t recall ever meeting this individual, but she obviously knew me and what I was going through.
She took time out of her day and remembered me. She didn’t leave a return address for me to respond with a thank you. She encouraged me without expecting anything in return. She made a difference and encouraged me through one of the most difficult times in my life.
She made me feel better about myself. She made me feel valued. She helped me see God's love in the midst of all I was going through.
Her words were a powerful source of hope to me.
Your words are powerful too, my friend. Today, choose to encourage!
With love and joy,
Laura
